I was walking around Brooklyn shooting trash for a project.
Saw a box on the curb. Printed on the side: I’M NOT TRASH.
I shot it. Glitched it. Posted it. That was it.
Months later, I was putting together a show.
Wanted to include some raw, honest pieces.
I threw this one in.
At the opening, a friend came.
He bought six pieces. This one stopped him.
He told me he grew up poor in Mississippi.
Used to call himself trash. That stuck for years.
Seeing that phrase hit something.
It helped break the story he’d been carrying.
I didn’t plan that.
But that’s what art does sometimes.
